What is bentonite clay?
Bentonite clay is a clay that is derived from volcanic ash.
It is a soft clay that is typically a green, gray, or cream color.
Because bentonite clay is a swelling clay, it can absorb a ton of liquid.
This clay is named for a place that contains large amounts of it: Fort Benton, Wyoming.
Fort Benton is still where a big portion of this clay comes from.
Another area that produces large amounts of this clay is, Montmorillon, France.
Clay from this area is often known as montmorillonite clay.
Both clays are the same, just with slightly different properties.
Some people are afraid to use bentonite clay because of its lead content. You can decide for yourself and your family if using bentonite clay is helpful for your health. This is a helpful article.
Just a few benefits of bentonite clay
detoxifying
Bentonite clay is probably most known for its ability to detox the body.
Bentonite clay is used to draw toxins, heavy metals and impurities out of your body. You can use it both internally and externally.
Aids digestion
Bentonite clay helps promote healthy digestion by removing toxins and heavy metals. It also helps neutralize bacteria and kill viruses in the gut.
Because of this, bentonite clay boosts immunity, helping to cut the number of sick days you have.
This clay may also help soothe and alleviate nausea and vomiting.
balances pH
Many of our bodies are too high in acidity because of our high sugar and unhealthy fat diets.
Bentonite clay is highly alkaline. Because of this, it helps balance the body’s pH to a normal, healthy pH.
This is important because, if your body is too acidic, you have a higher chance of being diagnosed with diabetes, heart disease, chronic pain, inflammation, or autoimmune diseases (source).
boosts nutrition
Bentonite clay is actually used for even more things than just detoxing the body of harmful toxins.
It also contains a hole passel of nutrients! Some of these nutrients include: magnesium, calcium, silica, copper, iron, sodium, and potassium. Win, win!
reduces skin issues
Bentonite clay helps relieve skin issues that are related to inflammation (such as acne, eczema, and poison ivy).
When made into a mask and left on the skin, this clay helps draw toxins, bacteria and excess oil out of the skin, as well as helping unclog pores.
You can also use bentonite clay on skin that is too oily, has a breakout from an allergic reaction, or any other inflamed skin condition.
boosts oral health
Again, bentonite clay helps oral health by absorbing bacteria and toxins in the mouth.
It also helps lower the acidity of your mouth, which is especially helpful if you have issues with cavities.
This clay even helps clean and polish your teeth and helps prevent bad breath.
hair health
Bentonite clay helps boost hair health by removing dead skin cells from the scalp, balancing pH and oil production, as well as, unclogging pores and absorbing bacteria.
To reap these hair and scalp benefits, apply a bentonite clay mask to your scalp and let it sit for 5-10 minutes before rinsing it out. Then shampoo and condition as normal.
soothes bug bites and stings
Bentonite clay can help draw out the poison and toxins from a bug bite or sting.
Make this clay into a paste using a little bentonite clay and water or apple cider vinegar.
deodorizes
Bentonite clay can be used to effectively cut down on certain smells, including body odor.
It does this by absorbing the bacteria that is causing the bad smells.
Add this clay to deodorant or foot powder to help get rid of bad smelling bacteria, or take it internally to help your body from the inside out.
