The ingredients
Cheese
For the classic cheese cracker flavor and color, you will want to use cheddar cheese.
I am using a mix of cheddar cheese and munster because I have an abundance of this mix in my freezer!
Flour
To help these crackers turn out the best, we are using all purpose white flour.
If you want to, however, you can swap it out for your favorite flour, the texture and flavor will be different though.
Butter
Using butter to make homemade crackers will give you some delicious flavor.
Use unsalted butter so that you can more easily control the saltiness level of the crackers.
Seasoning
For seasoning these homemade crackers, I prefer just to use plain sea salt.
You can play around with the flavors and add paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, or any of other seasoning your family loves.
Water
This cracker dough needs a bit of liquid to pull it all together and make it easier to roll out.
How to make homemade cheese crackers
To a large bowl, stand mixer bowl, or food processor, add 1/2 cup of softened butter and 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese.
Mix this in the mixer, food processor, or with a hand mixer until it is well combined and is smooth and fluffy. This will take around five minutes.
Next, add 2 cups of all-purpose flour to the bowl, in additions of 1/2 cup each. Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of salt over the flour on the last addition.
Mix until it is all combined and crumbly.
Slowly start adding some water, 1 tablespoon at a time. Continue adding water and mixing the dough until you can form the dough into a nice ball. This will be about 6-8 tablespoons of water.
Wrap the dough ball in plastic wrap and set it in the fridge for 1-2 hours. This will make it easier to roll out.
Take the dough ball out of the fridge and preheat the oven to 350°F.
Cut the dough ball into four pieces and roll each piece into a ball.
Place one dough ball between two pieces of parchment paper.
Flatten and then roll out using a rolling pin. The dough should be as thin as you can roll it, ideally less than 1/8 of an inch.
Cut the flattened dough into small squares using a knife or pizza cutter.
Place the squares onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Bake until lightly brown and crispy, this should take about 15-17 minutes.
Remove from the pan and let cool.
Repeat with the remaining dough balls.
Enjoy!
Recipe FAQs
My crackers are not very crispy, what is wrong?
Make sure that you roll the crackers thin enough before cutting them, otherwise they will not be able to crisp up.
You may need to bake the crackers for longer if they are not crispy yet.
My crackers are falling apart when I try to roll them out, what is wrong?
Make sure that you are rolling the crackers out between two sheets of parchment paper.
You can also add a bit of flour to the top of the dough to make it easier to roll.
If the dough seems a bit sticky, place it back in the fridge for a half hour and try rolling out again.
How to Store your homemade cheese crackers
After the crackers are completely cooled, place them in an airtight container.
Store these on the counter for up to 3 days, as long as your house is not too hot or humid.
Place in the fridge to store for up to 2 weeks.
These crackers will go bad if kept for too long because they are made with real ingredients!
Variations
Cheese
Feel free to substitute the cheddar cheese for almost any other hard cheese you like.
Try gouda, parmesan, munster, colby jack, or white cheddar.
Swap for just one cheese, or add a mix of cheeses to really play with the flavor.
Just keep in mind that the texture and flavor of the crackers will change if you swap out cheeses.
Butter
Feel free to swap out the butter for another solid fat (at room temperature) such as coconut oil, lard, or tallow.
Seasoning
When it comes to seasonings, the sky is the limit!
Add in some paprika, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, or rosemary. Use your imagination to make some delicious flavor combos.
