About the ingredients in this diy natural air freshening spray
This natural air freshening spray uses just 3 ingredients: baking soda, essential oils, and water.
The baking soda in this recipe is used to emulsify the essential oil into the liquid because oil does not readily mix into water.
Essential oil is used to make this room spray smell amazing.
Water is used in this recipe to stretch the essential oil so you aren’t spraying pure essential oil.

How to make air freshening spray
Ingredients:
- 30 drops essential oil (any of the above blends)
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 cup water
Directions:
1. Place the baking soda into a small jar or bowl.
2. Drop the essential oils into the baking soda.
3. Mix these together with a fork or small whisk, breaking up any clumps.
4. Add 1/2 cup of water and stir to combine.
5. Using a funnel, pour your diy air freshener spray into a 4 ounce or 8 ounce spray bottle.
Notes: The baking soda helps the essential oil blend into the water better. If you want to skip using the baking soda, you will need to shake the bottle well before using it.
This recipe keeps for about a month. If you want it to last longer add some vitamin E, this is a natural preservative.
How to Use: Shake bottle, spray throughout a room, on a carpet, or even on a couch.
What is wrong with conventional room sprays?
Conventional room sprays contain many harmful chemicals and ingredients.
Chemicals you wouldn’t want to ingest into your body, this is a problem because what you spray in the air will be ‘smelled’ into your body.
Some common harmful ingredients in store-boughten room sprays are:
- formaldehyde – can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat
- acetaldehyde – can irritate the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract
- acetone – can cause headaches, nausea, and confusion
- picric acid – can causes irritation and burns
- fragrances – can disrupt hormones
