Why make your own homemade glass cleaner?
One of the best reasons to make your own homemade glass cleaner is that you will cut down on toxins that you are using in your home.
Conventional glass cleaners contain so many ingredients that really don’t need to be in cleaning solutions to have them work effectively.
Most glass cleaners contain a lengthy list of chemicals, one of which has been my least favorite since childhood: ammonia. (The smell is etched in my memory!)
When making your own glass cleaner can be this cheap and easy, you will never want to go back to buying that blue or purple colored solution.

Tips on how to get those streak-free windows
Some quick tips when washing windows to prevent streaks:
- Use a wadded up newspaper to dry the window – BONUS! It leaves no lint!
- Use a microfiber cloth or paper towel to dry the window.
- Don’t spray too much glass cleaner on the window. It is easier to wash it twice if there is a lot of grime, otherwise you are most likely just pushing the grime in circles with lots of liquid.
- Use long sweeping motions when drying your windows, this is faster and easier then short choppy strokes.
- If you finish washing a window and there are some streaks left on the window, spray a little more glass cleaner on the area and scrub gently but firmly with your cloth, towel or newspaper.
How to use this homemade glass cleaner
When washing windows, it is important to know that you will want to work as quickly as you can. The longer you wait, the faster your glass cleaner will dry on the windows (you don’t want this). This will leave water spots, streaks, and in general the same dirty window you started with:).
1. Spritz your homemade glass cleaner onto the window pane.
2. With a microfiber or paper towel, or a wadded up newspaper, rub the window pane down very well, working in long motions, using gentle but firm pressure.
3. Continue drying the window with the cloth until all of the cleaning solution absorbed into your cloth or has evaporated off the window.
4. If there are any streaks left, scrub them off with your towel, or spray a small amount of solution on the window (or edge of the cloth) and wipe dry.

The ingredients
Vinegar: helps dissolve things like dirt, grime, and streaks left by bugs and birds. A gallon of plain ol’ vinegar that is diluted to 5% acidity is what I keep on hand for solutions like this.
Rubbing Alcohol: this works in this recipe by helping to dissolve dust and grease while also helps the glass cleaner evaporate faster. Rubbing alcohol is also known as isopropyl alcohol. For this homemade glass cleaner, use 70% alcohol, rubbing alcohol.
Water: lowers the concentration of vinegar and rubbing alcohol in the solution.
The combination of these three ingredients results in a highly effective glass cleaner. My family and I live close to several factories and refineries so the grimy window panes are endless.
I can wash the windows once a week and it would still be worth it!
Before using this recipe, I would only use vinegar and water. It does work ok, but the streaks are much harder to scrub off the window.
The addition of rubbing alcohol helps with streaks, as well as, helping boost cleaning power.
