My favorite way to dry clothes is, by far, on the clothes line.
However, fall is upon us with its rainy, wet days, and soon winter will be here.
Although I could drag all my laundry outside even on the coldest of days to freeze-dry, I typically just through them in my dryer.
The problem is, there is just something about the fresh smell of line-dried clothes that I miss.
Although I don’t want our clothing to smell ‘FRESH’ (as in fake fresh chemical smell), I would like them to smell of something…
I mean, nothing is better than something bad, but still.
Anyways, now that the line drying days are vanishing away, it is time to start up the dryer again.
But this year we are going all out and using dryer sheets.
Not the expensive, chemical laden ones though!
Dryer sheets are about the easiest laundry product to make at home. So let’s get into it!

What is the point of dryer sheets?
First, what is a dryer sheet?
A dryer sheet is a piece of material that you add to your dryer with your clean, wet laundry.
What is the point?
Dryer sheets help to reduce static in clothing and other laundry. Laundry dried in the dryer typically has a lot static because the more dry something is, the more static electricity there will be.
Another reason people like using dryer sheets is that they act as a scent booster.
Dryer sheets also help to soften your laundry, as well as, help prevent wrinkles.

Ingredients in most boughten dryer sheets
Some of the ingredients in conventional dryer sheets are not something you want to be putting on your skin all the time. Here are two of the biggest concerns.
- Dipalmethyl Hydroxyethylammonium Methosulfate A chemical that may contribute to asthma and respiratory problems, along with having some concern on its affects on reproductive and developmental health.
- Fragrance Fake fragrances can cause a lot of unwanted side effects including: headaches, nausea, respiratory issues, and neurological problems.
How to Make DIY non-toxic dryer sheets
Start by cutting some fabric into 5-7 inch squares. You can use any type of fabric you have on hand; an old t-shirt works great! Try to use a color that isn’t going to bleed into the other laundry, however (such as red).
Cut 30 squares of fabric.

Next, stuff the fabric squares into a 32 ounce jar with a lid. If your fabric is on the thicker side, you may only be able to fit 20 squares into the jar.

Pour 2 cups of vinegar over the fabric squares. Drop in 30 drops of essential oil.

Put the lid on the jar and screw it down tight. Give the jar a couple shakes.

Let the jar sit for at least 5 minutes before using.

How to Use your homemade dryer sheets
For a small load of laundry, add one dryer sheet to your dryer.
If the load is medium sized, add two. For a large load, add two or three dryer sheets.
After adding your laundry as normal and the dryer sheet(s), dry the laundry as usual.
What essential oils work for dryer sheets
You can pretty much use any of your favorite essential oils for these DIY natural dryer sheets.
Some of my favorites to use are:
You can also skip adding essential oils, as they are only adding fragrance. Skipping the essential oil will not effect the effectiveness of the dryer sheets.
If you are pregnant or are nursing, make sure you only use essential oils that your health provider says are safe for you, I am not a medical professional.
